treatment approaches
individual therapy
Contrary to the name, marriage and family therapists do work with individuals. We approach individuals from a family systems perspective; that is, we recognize that no man is an island and is a member of their systems (e.g., being a part of the family, being a part of their company, etc.).
marriage and family therapy
Marriage and family therapists are trained to approach issues from a systemic perspective. It is more than just being trained in a couple/relationship based approach (e.g., Gottman, EFT), it is about being aware of the different relationships and how they impact each other.
eye movement reprocessing desensitization (emdr)
According to the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA), EMDR is an extensively researched psychotherapy method that has been effective in treating trauma and other distressing life experiences. EMDR is different from the traditional ‘talk therapy’ as it involves minimal talking in detail about the distressing event, rather, it is focused on changing the emotions, thoughts, or behaviors resulting from the distressing issue by allowing the brain to engage in its natural healing process.
gottman method (level 1)
This couple/relationship-based approach was developed by John Gottman, a well-known researcher and therapist in the field of couples and relationships. According to Gottman, the goals of Gottman Method Couples Therapy are to dissolve conflicting verbal communication; increase intimacy, respect, and affection; remove barriers that create a feeling of stagnancy; and create a heightened sense of empathy and understanding within the context of the relationship.
cognitive behavioral therapy (cbt)
According to the American Psychological Association (APA), CBT is a form of psychological treatment based on several core principles:
1) Psychological problems are based, in part, on unhelpful ways of thinking.
2) Psychological problems are based, in part, on learned patterns of unhelpful behavior.
3) People suffering from psychological problems can learn better ways of coping with them, thereby relieving their symptoms and live better lives.
In essence, CBT involves learning to recognize unhelpful thinking patterns and learning coping skills to manage difficult situations.
medical family therapy
Medical family therapy adopts a biopsychosocial approach and family therapy principles in the collaborative treatment of individuals and families. This approach recognizes that the mind and body are connected; that is, physical health and mental health are interconnected and that both issues need to be addressed.
Trauma-informed
A trauma-informed approach recognizes how distressing life experiences can impact one’s development and well-being and is taken into consideration during treatment.
solution focused therapy
Solution focused therapy involves identifying one’s hope for the future (or goals) and identifying steps/solutions that can be taken in the present to achieve these goals.
